Although not the record-holder for Africa's most southerly point—that honor goes to Cape Agulhas roughly 93 miles to the southeast—the setting at Cape Point is absolutely breathtaking . The promontory's tip is made up of sheer sandstone cliffs and pyramid-shaped ridges that march into the roiling sea. Topping two of the peaks on the point are lighthouses, one old and one new. Our image shows the old lighthouse , in use between 1860 and 1919. Farther down the ridge toward the ocean is the new lighthouse , first lit the same year the old light was extinguished.
